Over the past 12 months, the Texas Department of State Health Services has been collaborating with the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH) at The University of Texas at Austin to provide training in wraparound for the state. TIEMH has also been working with the National Wraparound Initiative to build capacity in Texas for certified trainers and coaches. All providers of wraparound have been participating in regional trainings and working to implement high quality wraparound within their organizations and we have seen some good success. We are excited to announce a new initiative to continue to advance best practice wraparound practice – the Building Excellence in Wraparound Initiative (BEWI).

The Building Excellence in Wraparound Initiative will seek to support two Local Mental Health Authorities (LMHAs) to implement wraparound to full fidelity. DSHS has contracted with TIEMH to provide monthly coaching with wraparound supervisors to ensure local capacity to support wraparound facilitators within the organization. Coaching will occur through telephone conference calls as well as on-site visits by state and national coaches (quarterly). Wraparound support will include an assessment of fidelity at the beginning and conclusion of the initiative, with specific feedback provided to leadership to facilitate quality improvement. This will meet contractual requirements for fidelity assessment of wraparound within the FY14 Performance Contract. Approximately 12 months following the initiation of coaching, the organization will be eligible to apply for the Wraparound Organization of Excellence endorsement, offered by TIEMH. Information about the criteria to achieve the endorsement is in the application below.
